Under the hood
It is not a scientific decibel meter. It listens for what wakes babies (voices getting louder, sudden noises) and turns it into a reaction anyone understands.
In the first 10 seconds, with the baby asleep, it measures the normal sound of the room. A fan or air conditioner becomes the new āsilenceā.
The microphone is analyzed live in the browser. Loudness, how long the noise lasts and sharp sounds such as voices count more than a steady hum.
As the noise rises, the baby on the screen goes from sleeping to stirring, frowning and almost waking. Smoothing keeps it from flickering.
If it stays loud for a few seconds, a soft āshhhā plays. Listening pauses while it plays so it doesn't react to its own sound. If the baby wakes up, one tap pauses the alerts: crying is noise too, and it's not the adults' fault.
